Islamophobia: Racism Review
Islamophobia is a modern term that developed in the 1980s to refer to fear of or discrimination against Muslims in non-Muslim societies. It came into widespread use after the terrorism of September 11, 2001 and subsequent attacks in London, Bali and Mumbai. These attacks, combined with increasing migration of Muslims to the western world, have led to an increase in fear and hate directed against Muslims, resulting in hate crimes and discrimination.
Islamophobia was mentioned at the Declaration at WCAR where it was equated with antisemitism. It is is on the agenda for the Durban Review Conference.
